The Makeup of Man

Heart Of Man = Seat of the affections

Many people confuse the heart and spirit of man as being the same.  However, the bible has a different perspective.  David said, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10.  We also find this statement in Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

In Ezekiel 11:19, God said, “…I will give them one heart, and I will put a new {fresh or refreshed} spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:”  The Moffatt translation puts it this way, “I will remove their hard nature and give them a nature that can be touched.”

The heart of man is the seat of his affection, character and nature.  Just as the heart of a city drives and controls its existence so does the heart of man.  This is mans throne room the palace of his domain.

There are two kingdoms at war over this domain, the kingdom of your spirit or your soul.  In Romans 7:14-25, Paul wrote these words:

14  For we know that the law is spiritual: but *I* am fleshly, sold under sin.

15  For that which I do, I do not own: for not what I will, this I do; but what I hate, this I practice.

16  But if what I do not will, this I practice, I consent to the law that it is right.

17  Now then it is no longer *I* that do it, but the sin that dwells in me.

18  For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, good does not dwell: for to will is there with me, but to do right I find not.

19  For I do not practice the good that I will; but the evil I do not will, that I do.

20  But if what *I* do not will, this I practice, it is no longer *I* that do it, but the sin that dwells in me.

21  I find then the law upon *me* who will to practice what is right, that with *me* evil is there.

22  For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man:

23  but I see another law in my members, warring in opposition to the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which exists in my members.

24  O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me out of this body of death?

25    I thank God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then *I* *myself* with the mind serve God’s law; but with the flesh sin’s law {Darby translation}.

Paul also wrote this in Colossians 3:1-4:

1  If ye then be risen with Christ {the anointed one}, seek those things which are above (spirit controlled), where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

2  Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth {fleshly  lower nature}.

3  For ye are dead {to the things of the flesh}, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

4  When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory {a higher state of existence or in the spirit}.

Spirit Of Man = The real you—your direct link

  with the Father

The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

Proverbs 20:27

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

Ecclesiastes 12:7

But [there is] a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.

Job 32:8

The scripture is full of evidence the mans spirit (also known as the inner or inward man) belongs to God and is not only designed to be fully active but is the source of our existence through the grace of God.  In your spirit lies the potential of the fullness of your destiny and your heritage in Christ.  The more the door of mans heart is open to his spirit the greater the influence is of God’s spirit is in his life.  Thus creating, as it says in II Corinthians 5:17, a new creature.

It is our responsibility and privilege to put off the old man (the carnal soulish nature) and put on the new man (spirit controlled nature).  Don’t look to the things around you but the everlasting well within.  In II Corinthians 4:16-18, it tells us that the things on the outside are only temporary, but the things within are eternal.  It also says that as we do this, we are renewed each day.

Ephesians 4:17-24

17 ¶ This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,

18  Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

19  Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

20  But ye have not so learned Christ;

21  If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:

22  That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

23  And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

24  And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Soul Of Man = Mind, will, emotions, intellect.

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life {Spirit}; and man became a living soul.

Geneses 2:7

Without the breath of life, the soul could not exist.  Our whole life dependence comes from the breath of God Almighty.

The soul is the seat of the feelings, desires, affections.  The dwelling place of the emotions, appetites and passions.

Without the spirit of man, the soul cannot exist.  Without the soul of man, his spirit would have no vehicle of expression.  The issue between the two is control.  Without spiritual control, the soul of man is useless, reckless and out of sync with the divine plan will and purpose of God.  Not that the spirit is non existent, any creative force that comes out of man comes from the spirit of man.  However, without spiritual control the soul is as lost as can be.

The spirit of man belongs to God.  The only way my soul can come under subjection to the power and grace of God is for me to be subject, through the spirit, to the voice of God.  I must strive for my heart to become one with His heart, the my spirit may be released for His service.

In Philippians 2:5-13 Paul wrote:

5  Let this mind {frame of mind or attitude} be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

6  Who, being in the form {by which a person or thing strikes the vision} of God, thought it not robbery to be equal {in agreement with} with God:

7  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

8  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

9  Wherefore God also hath highly exalted {glorified} him, and given him a name which is above every name:

10  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

11  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

12 ¶ Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

13  For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

When we allow our mind to transformed into His image and likeness, we allow Him to do the work in our lives for His and our good pleasure.

Romans 12:2 tells us not to be conformed to the present day world system, but to be transformed {to change into another form} by the renewing of the mind.  As Enoch walked with God, so should we.  Oh what a wonderful gift God has given us, for our own intellect to lost in His.  For our own thinking to become one with His.  Our own ideas and plans, all to become His.

Body Of Man = Temporary dwelling place

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

1Corinthians 6:19

Without this fearfully and wonderfully made housing, the spirit or soul would not have a natural place to reside.  We would never be able to bow before the Lord in Worship, lift our hands in praise and surrender or shout to the Lord with the triumphant voice He has given us.  Our whole being is the workmanship of God. Designed for His glory.
